Style Challenge: What to Wear to a BBQ

It's officially summer, which means it's the perfect time for activities that involve the great outdoors!  This season is always fraught with pool parties, picnics, and of course, one of the yummiest traditions: barbeques!  We thought it might be fun to showcase what we'd wear to enjoy some delicious BBQ fare:

To me, nothing says "summer" more than gingham!  This yellow gingham dress is perfect for any summertime cookout; it's lightweight, flirty and fun!  I am a big fan of grilling in the summer -- nothing beats a lightly-charred hot dog.  I'm also dying to try grilled fruit (like pineapple and peaches) this summer!  What's your favorite grilled delicacy?

So this is what I literally wore to my family's Memorial Day BBQ back in May.  In the summer, I feel like you can never go wrong with primary colors.  They just scream Americana and grilled goodies, and blueberry cobbler, you know?  This little Mata Traders dress that was covered with yellow umbrellas and had a blue bottom on it paired up quite festively with my red, white, and blue owl tote and little peep toe flats and with that I was ready to party.  Now bring on the BBQ!

I'm always the most overdressed person in my family no matter what, but I especially stand out during events like barbecues. I'm fortunate enough to have a really close family that does things like get together and grill often (and by that I mean it's just my dad and one of my brothers who grills), so whenever we do something of the sort, I usually try to throw on something fairly casual. I wore this look on my blog recently, and while I didn't actually wear it to a BBQ, it's the kind of casual, fun outfit that I would wear for the occasion. Some sunglasses and sandals are a must, and I think some fun prints are necessary as well. I'm hoping we have a BBQ again soon so I can put on this exact outfit again.

When thinking of grilling out, I usually try to discern what type of occasion it is. If there will be bonfire-ing afterwards I wear my favorite pair of worn in jeans and boots with my hair up in my trusty scarf. If it will be a warmer night, a comfy dress and jean jacket is my go to ensemble! Either way I usually end up wearing denim in some fashion because it is so sturdy. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a marshmallow fiend when it comes to fires, so I definitely need something I don't mind getting too dirty in either :) S'mores, you know?

Happy Grilling friends!

Most BBQs in the AZ desert are centered around a pool party since it's the only way to make the blazing heat tolerable. This summer I've been pretty obsessed with my pretzel float :) An easy jersey dress, jelly sandals, and a head scarf round out my go-to party outfit.

The dry heat in Southern California isn't fun to be around, so for BBQs and other outdoor events I usually stick to lightweight fabrics that breathe well (and quite honestly, short shorts, mini dresses, and sleeveless crop tops=lifesavers in the summer). I still make sure to incorporate a bright color or two and quirky patterns. Here, I'm wearing a coral ruffle blouse with a ditsy daisy print, gray and white striped shorts by Dear Creatures (sorry so wrinkly--I'd been out and about that day), and my leather flower sandals by Poetic Licence.

When going to a BBQ anytime in spring or summer, you can most likely find me with a big hat on my head to protect me from the strong sun we get in the southwest. That, and a mug full of iced coffee, which makes this outfit more than fitting for my next BBQ!

What do you wear to a summer BBQ?

  1. That pretzel float! That is so amazing. Aah, to be in America with swimming pools every where. It's burning heat in London right now, and jumping in water is such a perfect fantasy! I love all the outfits, every one looks so cheery in their bbq outfits.
